BanglaLion, one of the WiMAX license holders will not be able to start their operation in June due to technical difficulties. It may take at least one or one and half month more for them to start offering Internet and data service. Earlier, Anwar Hossain, chairman of BD Finance, informed that BanglaLion will start WiMAX Internet Service at the end of May. It is to be noted that BD finance owns almost 20% share of BanglaLion.
In that case Bangladesh may get the taste of WiMAX at the end of July. By the end of 2009, the service will be activated completely only in capital Dhaka. Previously a promise of activating WiMAX at the beginning of June was made by top placed earned in auction, BanglaLion Communications. But the organization even could not start test operation yet. On the other hand Augere is facing frequency problem. They also will not be able to start test before August.

When asked about the delay chairman of BanglaLion Communications Major (retired) Abdul Mannan said, though we were supposed to start in June we still have not reached the stage of serving customers. However he expressed hope of starting test operation in June. He said, it’s a new technology in Bangladesh. That is why before offering it to customers, faults and shortcomings of operating the equipments needs to be verified. And about duration of test operations he says, this operation could end in one to one and half month.
In the meantime an Augere high official says, though all the preparations were moderately taken because of frequency problem, delay occurred. At the beginning of August or September they will be able to start test runs and to provide service with few days. Mean while, the other license holder, Mango Telecom, is not even in the news.
In September of last year BTRC decided to give license to three operators in an open auction. In the auction maximum bid of Tk 215 crore by BanglaLion was called on. Other operators had to get license with the same price.
