Broadband Quality War: Are you a Winner or a Loser?

Quality of Service Experience is not that emphasized by the operators or regulatory body ever since the introduction of Broadband in Bangladesh. Often people don’t know what to expect from several ISPs. This was one of the ‘stories’ presented at the Public Seminar ‘Broadband Quality War: Are you a Winner or a Loser?’ – jointly organized by LIRNEasia and IT sectional Committee of the Institution of Engineers in Colombo on April 29, 2009. Prof. Timothy Gonsalves of IIT Madras, R. Thirumurthy of Midas Communication Technologies with representatives from Dialog and Mobitel Sri Lanka joined Mr. Chanuka Wattegama, Senior Research Manager & Broadband Specialist, LIRNEasia in making presentation. Fortunately I had the opportunity to present at that seminar especially due to the initiative taken by Mr. Chanuka. I worked with him in diagnosing the QoS of offered broadband service at Dhaka in September 2008 and February 2009. Some of my results were also shown in the seminar.

Now it is time for you to come forward and contribute for the national cause. There are so many ISPs in Bangladesh and you may be the subscriber to one of them. You can provide enough information to others about your experience by using a simple tool so that one can choose from packages offered by different ISP. And the tool is AT-Tester. AT-Tester is a simple, user friendly software application built on FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) which can test the performance of any broadband link irrespective of technology or the type of package. It is a joint effort of LIRNEasia and a team from IIT Madras, and developed based on AshokaTissa (AT) methodology of broadband testing.

The tests can be conducted by any user, with least effort and within few minutes. No more than basic computer literacy is required. All you need is a PC running Windows XP connected to Internet. (Other operating systems will be supported in near future).
